Inelastic neutron scattering study of proton dynamics in Ca(OH)2 at 20 K

1995

Abstract Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra of Ca(OH) 2 at 20 K are presented from 30 to 4000 cm −1 for a powder sample, from 30 to 12000 cm −1 for an oriented single-crystal. INS band splitting due to the lattice density-of-states is observed. Polarization effects reveal the orientation of atomic displacements for each mode and a new band assignment scheme is proposed. For the single-crystal, the v OH mode and overtones are observed. This oscillator shows only moderate anharmonicity. Spectrum simulation reveals that INS spectral intensities are not consistent with simple normal coordinates and harmonic force-fields for Ca(OH) 2 entities. A new dynamical model is proposed, including…

The Boson Peak of Amyloid Fibrils: Probing the Softness of Protein Aggregates by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

2014

Proteins and polypeptides are characterized by low-frequency vibrations in the terahertz regime responsible for the so-called "boson peak". The shape and position of this peak are related to the mechanical properties of peptide chains. Amyloid fibrils are ordered macromolecular assemblies, spontaneously formed in nature, characterized by unique biological and nanomechanical properties. In this work, we investigate the effects of the amyloid state and its polymorphism on the boson peak. We used inelastic neutron scattering to probe low-frequency vibrations of the glucagon polypeptide in the native state and in two different amyloid morphologies in both dry and hydrated sample states. The dat…

Magnetic Excitations in Polyoxometalate Clusters Observed by Inelastic Neutron Scattering:  Evidence for Anisotropic Ferromagnetic Exchange Interacti…

1999

The ground-state properties of the tetranuclear Co2+ cluster [Co4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]10- were investigated by combining specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization measurements with a detailed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on a fully deuterated sample of K10[Co4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]·22H2O. As a result of the single ion anisotropy of the octahedral Co2+, the appropriate exchange Hamiltonian of the Co4 spin cluster is anisotropic. INS turns out to be essential for the determination of energy splittings in the ground state resulting from the coupling. Besides the energy pattern, INS provides information about the wave functions of the split ground-state components of the spin c…

Magnetic Excitations in Polyoxometalate Clusters Observed by Inelastic Neutron Scattering:  Evidence for Ferromagnetic Exchange Interactions and Spin…

1999

The ground-state properties of the tetranuclear Ni2+ cluster [Ni4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]10- were investigated by combining magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements with a detailed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on a fully deuterated sample of K6Na4[Ni4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]·24H2O. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility indicates a ferromagnetic coupling of the four constituent Ni2+ ions (s = 1), and a low-temperature magnetization study provides the magnitude of the S = 4 ground-multiplet splitting due to the single-ion anisotropy of the Ni2+ ions. Besides a more direct and precise determination of the anisotropic S = 4 ground-multiplet splitting, INS enabled t…

Magnetic polyoxometalates: anisotropic exchange interactions in the moiety of [(NaOH2)Co3(H2O)(P2W15O56)2]17-.

2005

The magnetic exchange interactions in a C0(3)(11) moiety encapsulated in Na(17) [(NaOH(2))Co(3)(H(2)O)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)] (NaCo(3)) were studied by a combination of magnetic measurements (magnetic susceptibility and low-temperature magnetization), with a detailed Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) investigation. The novel structure of the salt was determined by X-ray crystallography. The ferromagnetic Co(3)O(14) triangular cluster core consists of three octahedrally oxo-coordinated Co(II) ions sharing edges. According to the single-ion anisotropy and spin-orbit coupling usually assumed for octahedral Co(II) ions, the appropiate exchange Hamiltonian to describe the ground-state properties o…

Magnetism in Polyoxometalates: Anisotropic Exchange Interactions in the Co Moiety of [Co3W(D2O)2(ZnW9O34)2]12−—A Magnetic and Inelastic Neutron Scatt…

2002

The ground-state properties of a Co moiety encapsulated in a polyoxometalate anion were investigated by combining measurements of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and low-temperature magnetization with a detailed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on a fully deuterated polycrystalline sample of Na12[Co3W(D2O)2(ZnW9O34)2]⋅40 D2O (Co3). The ferromagnetic Co3O14 cluster core consists of three octahedrally oxo-coordinated CoII ions. According to the single-ion anisotropy and spin–orbit coupling of the octahedral CoII ions, the appropriate exchange Hamiltonian to describe the ground-state properties of the Co3 spin cluster is anisotropic and is expressed as ℋ=−2Σ(JŜ1αŜ2α+JŜ2αŜ3α), w…

Rigid versus Flexible Protein Matrix: Light-Harvesting Complex II Exhibits a Temperature-Dependent Phonon Spectral Density

2018

Dynamics-function correlations are usually inferred when molecular mobility and protein function are simultaneously impaired at characteristic temperatures or hydration levels. In this sense, excitation energy transfer in the photosynthetic light-harvesting complex II (LHC II) is an untypical example because it remains fully functional even at cryogenic temperatures relying mainly on interactions of electronic states with protein vibrations. Here, we study the vibrational and conformational protein dynamics of monomeric and trimeric LHC II from spinach using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) in the temperature range of 20-305 K. INS spectra of trimeric LHC II reveal a distinct vibrational …

Continuum elastic sphere vibrations as a model for low-lying optical modes in icosahedral quasicrystals

2004

The nearly dispersionless, so-called "optical" vibrational modes observed by inelastic neutron scattering from icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn and Zn-Mg-Y quasicrystals are found to correspond well to modes of a continuum elastic sphere that has the same diameter as the corresponding icosahedral basic units of the quasicrystal. When the sphere is considered as free, most of the experimentally found modes can be accounted for, in both systems. Taking into account the mechanical connection between the clusters and the remainder of the quasicrystal allows a complete assignment of all optical modes in the case of Al-Pd-Mn. This approach provides support to the relevance of clusters in the vibrational prop…

Inelastic neutron scattering due to acoustic vibrations confined in nanoparticles: theory and experiment

2008

The inelastic scattering of neutrons by nanoparticles due to acoustic vibrational modes (energy below 10 meV) confined in nanoparticles is calculated using the Zemach-Glauber formalism. Such vibrational modes are commonly observed by light scattering techniques (Brillouin or low-frequency Raman scattering). We also report high resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements for anatase TiO2 nanoparticles in a loose powder. Factors enabling the observation of such vibrations are discussed. These include a narrow nanoparticle size distribution which minimizes inhomogeneous broadening of the spectrum and the presence of hydrogen atoms oscillating with the nanoparticle surfaces which enhan…

Polyoxometalates: From Magnetic Models to Multifunctional Materials

2002

In this article we have presented some recent achievements of the polyoxometalates in the fields of molecular magnetism and functional molecular materials. In the context of the molecular magnetism we have shown that POMs provide ideal examples of magnetic clusters with coexisting ferro and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions which can be investigated using a variety of magnetic techniques, including the Inelastic Neutron Scattering spectroscopy, to get a thorough characterization of the magnetic levels in these large clusters, and to test the validity of the spin hamiltonians commonly used in magnetism.
